Enders Analysis estimates that half of all the UK’s broadcaster viewing will still be via broadcast signals by 2040, assuming organic progression in the migration to streaming without governmental interventions. “Broadcast delivery will remain strong due to the live schedule,” the company said in October.
The research and analysis firm observes that broadcasters are accelerating their transformation into digital-first businesses. “We estimate that 17% of broadcasters’ viewing on the TV set will have been delivered by IP this year.”
However, free-to-air platforms have a more complex migration pathway to IP than Pay TV, the firm notes. Related to this, and because of the existing strength of DTT and its older demographic profile, Enders Analysis expects a dominant role for DTT in UK broadcasting later this decade. “DTT will account for more broadcaster viewing hours than satellite and cable combined by 2029,” it says.
